FISHING - CONSERVATION - EDUCATION
With the scheduled fall/winter ramp down and lowering of the Upper Deschutes Waterflows, the Central Oregon Irrigation District (COID) is asking for volunteers to rescue stranded fish at Lava Island Falls on the Deschutes above Bend (and below Big Eddy). The rescue effort involves moving these side channel fish to the main channel.
If you would like to volunteer, and for more detailed information, please contact Shon Rae at COID directly at: srae@coid.org
Each day is divided into a morning and afternoon shift. The work is hauling buckets with rescued fish out of the side channels and back to the main stem of the Deschutes; netting electroshocked fish and placing them into buckets; and tabulating fish counts. Regardless of the task, it is advised that all volunteers bring wders. The meeting site is the parking area just above Lava Island Fall (which is also the take-out for the Big Eddy whitewater run).
